About
Dr. Arjuna Sathiaseelan is a computer scientist, social entrepreneur and humanitarian technologist whose career has been defined by a single, consistent mission: ensuring that the internet and the opportunities it confers are accessible to every person on earth, regardless of geography, income or language.
At Cambridge Judge Business School, he co-leads the Space Economy Initiative, advancing affordable, inclusive and sustainable access to space, and serves as Technical Lead of the Frugal AI Hub, championing technologies that are lean, local and low-cost for communities in resource-constrained environments.
As CEO and Co-Founder of GAIUS Networks / Flipped.ai, a NYU spinout, Arjuna has built an AI-powered talent intelligence platform trusted by enterprises worldwide. He is also the Founder of the Saving Voices Initiative, applying open-source frugal AI to preserve endangered languages at risk of disappearing within a generation.
A recognised voice on global connectivity, he founded and chaired the IRTF Global Access to the Internet for All (GAIA) research group, influencing internet standardisation to be more inclusive and connecting over one million marginalised users to the internet through community network initiatives worldwide. His membership of the Internet Research Steering Group at the IETF placed him at the highest levels of global internet governance.
Arjuna holds a PhD in Networking from King's College London (2005), an MSc in Computing and Internet Systems from King's College London (2001), and a Bachelor's in Computer Science and Engineering from NIT Trichy, India (2000).
He was awarded the prestigious King's Distinguished Alumni International Impact Award (2026) and the Distinguished Alumni Achiever Award from NIT Trichy (2016).
Philosophy
Throughout his career, Arjuna has worked on problems that the commercial technology sector largely ignores, using methods specifically designed to be affordable, open-source and sustainable for the communities they serve.
This philosophy of frugal innovation holds that technologies should be lean, local and low-cost: designed from the outset for resource-constrained environments rather than retrofitted for them. It underpins his work at the Frugal AI Hub, the Saving Voices Initiative, and his two decades of research into universal internet access.
Based in Cambridge and working across the Global South, Arjuna holds a conviction that technological progress must be inclusive to be meaningful, and that the communities most underserved by mainstream technology have the most to gain from it.

Visit frugalai.org →Co-founded with Dr Sarbani Banerjee Belur, the Saving Voices Initiative applies frugal, open-source artificial intelligence to the urgent challenge of indigenous language preservation. Of the world's approximately 7,000 languages, more than half are endangered. The communities that speak them typically lack access to the commercial AI infrastructure that supports better-resourced languages. Saving Voices builds voice models designed to function in resource-constrained environments so that the technology can be owned and used by the communities themselves.
